The Tower shows a tall building on a rocky peak with its crown knocked off by lightning, flames at the windows, and two figures falling through the air. The sky is dark, and small shapes fall with them. Nothing about the card is gentle, and it rarely arrives when a situation is calm. In a reading it names a shock that clears something away, usually faster than you would have chosen.

What the Tower says upright

Upright, the Tower is the end of a structure that was never as solid as it looked. A belief, a plan, a job, a relationship, or a version of yourself you were maintaining: something in the picture does not survive contact with a fact you can no longer avoid. In most readings the lightning is information arriving at speed.

After the shock there is usually a stage where the ground is clear and you can see what you were standing on. People often describe that part as relief mixed with grief, and both are reasonable. What the card does not support is pretending the tower is still standing.

Some Tower readings describe an inner collapse with no outside event at all. The realisation lands in one afternoon, and the structure comes down in how you think about something.

What the Tower says reversed

Reversed, the Tower tends to be about a demolition that keeps being postponed. You can see the cracks, and you are busy with the scaffolding. That might mean staying in a situation you have already decided to leave, or keeping a belief going because the alternative asks too much of you.

The pressure rarely goes away on its own. Reversed, the card asks how long you intend to hold the walls up, and what it costs you to keep doing it.

Questions to ask in a reading

  • What have you been maintaining that you would not build again from scratch?
  • If the shock has already happened, what does the cleared ground look like?
  • What is the cost of keeping this up for another six months?
  • Who or what would you rely on if this came down tomorrow?

How it reads with the other cards

Before the Tower, the Devil often shows the situation you are attached to, and the two together can name what the Tower is likely to break. After it, the Star is the usual companion, since it speaks of the slow return of hope once the noise stops. With the Ten of Pentacles or the Four of Wands nearby, the Tower tends to aim at a family or a home.
