An angel stands with one foot in the water and one on dry land, pouring liquid from one cup into another. Behind her a path climbs towards a small crown of light on the horizon. Irises grow at the edge of the water. Temperance is about the slow business of mixing things that do not naturally sit together, and about giving that mixture the time it needs.

What Temperance says upright

Upright, it asks for the middle path. A little and often rather than a great deal at once, steady habits, and the patience to let a change take effect before judging it. It often turns up during a long recovery, a slow course of study, or a period when you are rebuilding something that was damaged. Nothing about this card is quick.

It is also the card of blending, which is why it appears in questions about two people’s lives fitting together, or about work and home pulling in different directions. The angel does not choose one cup over the other. She pours between them.

In practical readings it can point to moderation in food, drink, spending or temper, and to a compromise that nobody finds exciting but everybody can live with.

What Temperance says reversed

Reversed, the balance is off. One part of life has been swallowing the rest, whether that is work, drink, a screen, a person, or a worry that has taken up the whole room. It often shows up when someone knows what has gone out of shape and has not yet done anything about it.

It can also describe plain impatience: going to extremes because the middle feels dull, or trying to force two things together before they are ready. In readings about people, the reversed card often means two positions that have hardened, with no one willing to move an inch.

How it reads with the other cards

With the Two of Cups it reads as a fair exchange between two people, where both give and take in equal measure. Beside the Devil, the Temperance angel has her work cut out, because the Devil stands for appetite and excess and the pair together usually means a habit that has taken hold. The Star nearby keeps the healing gentle and slow, the way this card prefers it.
