The Magician stands behind a table with a cup, a sword, a pentacle and a wand on it. One hand points at the sky and the other at the ground, and a figure of eight floats above his head. Roses and lilies grow at his feet. In a reading he turns up when the resources are already there and the only thing missing is the decision to use them.

What the Magician says upright

Upright, this is a card about capability. You have what the job needs, including skills you have been treating as ordinary. The Magician is the nudge to name them out loud, first to yourself and then to whoever needs to hear it.

It is also about focus. The four tools on the table are the whole of the minor arcana, and the Magician works because he uses one at a time. Half finished projects and scattered attention are the failure mode here. Pick the thing, give it your whole effort, and the card suggests it will move quickly.

The raised wand carries a second point. How you frame the task before you start has more influence on how it goes than most people admit.

What the Magician says reversed

Reversed, the tools stay in the drawer. This is the card of a talent that has not been used, or a project talked about for a year and never begun. It also appears when someone is capable and does not believe it, waiting for permission that is not coming.

There is a harder reading. Reversed, the Magician warns about persuasion that tips into manipulation, in someone else or in you: a pitch that oversells, or a neat argument that avoids the awkward number. The card asks whether your methods would survive being explained out loud.

Questions to ask in a reading

  • What do I already have that I have been overlooking?
  • If this were going to work, what would the first step be?
  • Am I explaining my work clearly, or hoping it speaks for itself?
  • Where am I tempted to make something sound better than it is?

How it reads with the other cards

With the Fool the reading is about a beginning and the nerve to start it. Beside the Emperor, the power is there but structure holds it back. Next to the Two of Wands it reads as a plan waiting for the decision to go.
