What the Three of Swords says upright

Upright, it is honest about pain. This is one of the few cards in the deck with no consolation hidden in the picture. It usually marks grief that is happening now, and it often appears around love: an affair, a parting, a relationship that ended without explanation.

Swords deal in words and thoughts, so the wound is often made by something said, or by something that should have been said and was not. The heart is pierced, and the mind keeps going back to it. That is the shape of the card: the hurt itself, and then the replaying of it at three in the morning.

Worth saying in a reading: the card does not predict this. It describes what is already true and gives permission to feel it without putting on a brave face. The rain in the background is doing something useful, since rain clears.

What the Three of Swords says reversed

Reversed, the swords come out. Healing is rarely tidy, and this card does not pretend otherwise. It can mark the point where someone can talk about what happened without the whole day going under, or where they have stopped checking an old phone.

It also catches the stuck version: forgiveness offered too quickly, or a person who has decided they are fine because being not fine was inconvenient for everyone else. Where the reversed card sits next to the Five of Cups or the Nine of Swords, the sadness is still live and worth naming.

How it reads with the other cards

The Three of Swords shares its suit with the Five of Swords, which is conflict between people, and the Nine of Swords, which is what the mind does with it afterwards. Next to the Lovers or the Two of Cups, the reading is usually about a relationship. With Temperance or the Star, the swords are being drawn out slowly and the spread turns towards recovery.
