What the Ten of Pentacles says upright

Upright, this is the settled end of the suit of pentacles. Money that is already earned, a home that belongs to you, savings that will hold, and a position in the world that does not need defending every day. It usually arrives after a long project or a long stretch of steady work, and it feels less exciting than it sounds.

The other half of the card is family and what gets handed down. It can mean an inheritance, a business passed on, a family recipe, or the habits and expectations you learned from the people who raised you. Often it points to the sense of being part of something that began before you and will continue afterwards.

In readings it can also describe the older person in a family, the one who holds the knowledge and the keys.

What the Ten of Pentacles says reversed

Reversed, the family and the money start arguing with each other. Inheritance disputes, debts passed down, a house that is shared and resented, or a will that has not been written because writing it would mean admitting something. Money is rarely just money in this card.

It can also describe feeling outside the picture. The family has the security and you are not in it, or the wealth is real but out of your reach. Some readings take the reversed card as a warning about tying your worth to what your family owns.

With the Three of Pentacles it describes a shared project, work that several people do together and are paid for together. The Ten of Cups nearby gives the same settled picture in emotional terms, a household where people are glad to be there. The Four of Pentacles shifts the reading to hoarding, since the Four holds tight to what the Ten has already secured.
